The Tales of Kolyma are considered Varlam Shalamov's greatest work. Based on the writer's dialogue with Anton Chekhov's Sakhalin Island and on Shalamov's reading of 19th century prose, this article discusses some formal elements of Shalamov's literary text with a view to presenting the new prose of the author, as the only possible way to represent the experience of the Stalinist camps. In the second part, two narratives, by Chekhov and Chalamov, are analyzed, focusing on the narrators of their stories and their points of view on the characters. In addition, the analysis seeks to show how Shalamov's experience as a witness to the Gulag modifies narrative structures in the name of literary representation.
