Abstract

This article discusses the various strategies used by slaves to reach freedom through manumission in Rio Grande, Province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul, between 1820 to 1860´s. Therefore, we used the sources available in the Acervo dos Tabelionatos de municípios do interior do Rio Grande do Sul and dialogue with authors who discuss the topic in other locations in the same century.
