This article aims to analyze the historiography about slavery in Mato Grosso in the 19th century, focusing on the region known as Sant’Ana de Paranaíba and also to discuss the role of enslaved women in that location. It should be noted that Sant'Ana de Paranaíba was far from the great political and economic centers of the time. Despite the distance, the locality was inserted in the slave society and in the imperial dynamics, mainly in the imperial intentions to know and to “occupy” the interior of Brazil. There are few historical documents that portray the role of women in the society of Sant’Ana de Paranaíba, and even rarer those that contain something about slave women. We used as historical sources Declarations of siza, letters of freedom and the List of the Fund of Emancipation.
