Abstract

This essay is about the proximity between Machado de Assis and Dostoevsky, given that both writers criticized the extreme rationalism of their time. By analyzing parts of the short story “O alienista”, the author supports the thesis that Machado de Assis is one of the writers in which the pulse of history can be most felt, even though the short-storys narrator does not pay too much attention to historical facts, since he wants to express the big problem generated by the coexistence of reason and insanity
