Author Biographies

  • Rita Chaves, Universidade de São Paulo. Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas

    Bachelor's at Letras from Universidade Federal Fluminense (1978), master's at Language from Universidade Federal Fluminense (1984) and doctorate at Language from Universidade de São Paulo (1993). Has experience in Language, focusing on Others Literature Vernacle, acting on the following subjects: literatura angolana, áfrica, angola, história and brasil.

     
  • Nazir Ahmed Can, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Serra Húnter Programme

    Lecturer Professor in Portuguese Language and Translation at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB/Serra Húnter), Nazir Ahmed Can is also, in this institution, vice-dean of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation and coordinator of the area of Portuguese. PhD in Theory of Literature and Comparative Literature from UAB, he was an associate professor of African Literatures at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, a visiting professor at the University of Salamanca, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of São Paulo, and a visiting predoctoral researcher at University of Liverpool. In the last 10 years, his research projects have been funded by FAPESP, CAPES, CNPq and FAPERJ - Brazilian public agencies that support scientific research. His current research focuses on the relationships between translation, geography and fictional narrative in African contexts.
    He is coordinator of PIELÁFRICA Group ('Pactos e impactos do espaço nas literaturas africanas', CNPq-Brazil), member of REICIT Group ('Grup de Recerca en Estudis Interculturals i Traducció', Autonomous University of Barcelona) and collaborating member of ORION ('Portuguese Orientalism', University of Lisbon), CRIMIC ('Centre de Recherches Interdisciplinaires sur les Mondes Ibériques Contemporains', Sorbonne University), and GeoÁfrica ('Spaces and Societies in Sub-Saharan Africa', Federal University of Rio de Janeiro). He is the author of the books "João Paulo Borges Coelho: ficção, memória, cesura" (Rio de Janeiro: Folha Seca, 2021), "O campo literário moçambicano. Tradução do espaço e formas de insílio" (São Paulo: Kapulana, 2020), "Discurso e poder nos romances de João Paulo Borges Coelho" (Maputo: Alcance, 2014), and co-editor, among others, of "The Africas in the World and the World in the Africas: African Literatures and Comparativism" (Holden, Massachusetts: Quod Manet, 2022) "Racism and Racial Surveillance. Modernity Matters" (London/New York: Routledge, 2021), "Geografias literárias de língua portuguesa no século XXI" (Roma: Tab Edizioni, 2021), "Visitas a João Paulo Borges Coelho.   • Catarina Nunes de Almeida, Universidade Nova de Lisboa

    Catarina Nunes de Almeida (PhD, NOVA University of Lisbon, 2012) is an Assistant Researcher at the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon, where she also teaches in graduate and postgraduate courses. Full member of the Centre for Comparative Studies (CEComp), she is the PI of the cluster «ORION - Portuguese Orientalism» since 2019. At the CEComp she also develops an individual research project on «A Viagem ao Oriente na Literatura Portuguesa Contemporânea (1990-2020)» [The Voyage to the East in Contemporary Portuguese Literature (1990-2020)]. Before starting her PhD in Portugal, she had a contract as a Portuguese Language Lecturer at the University of Pisa (Italy) for two academic years (2007/2008-2008/2009). Her work is mainly focused on Portuguese Orientalism, Travel Writing and Contemporary Portuguese Literature. She has published books, book chapters and articles on these subjects in scholarly anthologies and peer-reviewed journals. She is also the author of six poetry books.
