The cousin Basílio is a novel that has great entry into Brazilian culture. His most typical character, Conselheiro Acácio, is one of those responsible for the survival of the novel in our imagination. With this scenario, we seek to understand, through three press vehicles - Jornal do Commercio, Gazeta de Notícias and O Paiz -, how this character's figuration and refiguration takes place. Based on a survey of the terms “Conselheiro Acácio” and “acaciano”, we tabulated the data and analyzed it to map the uses of these terms. Thus, we were able to verify how the character's autonomization took place in these newspapers in Rio de Janeiro.
