Abstract

The repercussion of the essay Can the Subaltern Speak? (1985/1988) was internationally wide, but less well known is its modification of the interpretativ view of the term subaltern subject in the book A Critique of Postcolonial Reason (1999) in the “History” section. In 2000, Spivak participated in the congress ABRALIC (Terra & Gentes) in Salvador da Bahia but left no trace in Brazil – until the translation of the essay as a book in 2010 by the publisher of UFMG. The proposed article adds the new conclusion, in order to complete the importance of the author’s review of her position in the debate on the subalternitivity.

Author Biographies

  • Natália Lima Ribeiro, Universidade Federal do Pará

    M.A. in Literary Studies from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), she is an effective teacher of Portuguese language at the Secretaria Estadual de Educação do Pará (SEDUC-PA). Currently she is a collaborator and translator in the research group Amazonia - Narratology - Anthropocene (ANA), under the coordination of Professor Gunter Karl Pressler (UFPA). The developed research aims to deepen the theoretical understanding of narrative discourse, particularly about the great narratives, Amazonia (cultural space) and the Anthropocene, the new geological era.

    Professor of Literary Theory at the Universidade Federal do Pará (Undergraduate) and at the PPGLetras/Belém and PPLinguagens e Saberes na Amazônia/UFPA - Bragança Campus. Post-Doctorate at the Interdisciplinary Center for Narratology (ICN) University of Hamburg/Germany, with a CAPES scholarship, 2014/2015. Occupation of the Sérgio Buarque de Holanda Chair of Brazilian Studies (Free University of Berlin and DAAD), 2013/2014. Postdoctoral fellowship at the Universities of Osnabrück and Constance/Germany, with a CAPES fellowship, 2004/2005. PhD from the FFLCH of the Universidade de São Paulo, 1995, with a thesis on Walter Benjamin's reception in Brazil (book/CD, 2006); MA from the Institute for the History of Literature and German Language of the University of Munich: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, 1985, with a study on the philosophy of language in W.Benjamin (book, 1992). Research interests: Literature - Interpretation, circulation and reception (PPGL - Master's and Doctorate of UFPA, Belém); Cultural Reading and Translation (PPLSA - Master's of UFPA, Bragança). Researches on Walter Benjamin, Dalcídio Jurandir, Literature from and about the Amazon, Reception Theory, Fictionality/Factuality, Narratology, Philosophy of Language. Co-organizer of the international and interdisciplinary symposium Amazonia - polyphonic modernity and cultural spaces (Berlin, 2014). Currently, Coordinator of the research group Amazonia - Narratology - Anthropocene (ANA), which develops research on the theoretical deepening of narrative discourse, particularly on grand narratives, Amazonia (cultural space) and the Anthropocene, the new geological time.
