My proposal for this article is to analyze the survival of medieval songs (cantigas) in the creations of Portuguese courtly poets. I intend to show the characteristics of the new song and to present examples of them, adding relevant analyses. The
sixteenth-century song, like the vilancete, is a fixedform composition, with four or five verses in the mote and eight or ten in the glosa. However, in Garcia de Resende’s Cancioneiro Geral, 1516, many of them do not follow this scheme, and presenting glosa varying between nine and eleven verses. The new song presents the creativity of the Portuguese and Castilian poets of the XV and XVI centuries.
