Neste ensaio, a autora analisa provérbios e aforismos presentes em Grande Sertão: Veredas, de Guimarães Rosa, e em João Vêncio: os seus amores e Nós, os do Makulusu, de Luandino Vieira, enquanto formas tipicamente orais apropriadas pelo gênero romance, revelando sua função estrutural nos textos e os modos de sua apropriação pela escrita.
