This article is an excerpt from Rigo’s research (2020) on Puppet Theater in Sign Language, a cultural artifact of deaf communities. A distinct and innovative theatrical modality that comprises puppets, masks, objects, shadows and other animated figures, bringing deaf artists and the use of their own visual language — sign language — to the stage. The text discusses more precisely the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and the qualification of deaf actors.
