Abstract

This article aims at undertaking a comparative study between the book Of Mice and Men (1937), by the North writer John Steinbeck, and its two adaptations to the Cinema, occurring, respectively, in 1939, under the direction of Lewis Milestone, and in the year 1992, directed by Gary Sinise. This confrontation is grounded by the Theory of Adaptation and Intersemiotic Translation and aims at verifying and interpreting, from this comparison, the process of (re)creation of the literary work for the Seventh Art, occasioned by the transposition of different semiotic systems. After lengthy analysis and discussion, we have seen, incisively, that every film adaptation, due to the subjective interpretation of a given number of adapters, should be studied as an autonomous work, and being, likewise can’t be judged by criteria of fidelity, since this becomes impossible during the process of adaptation. We have detected, moreover, that creative adaptations of both scriptwriters and directors are given, mainly, by the subjective reading of them.
