TELLING THE OTHER ITALY BETWEEN HISTORY AND FICTION.
SOME CONSIDERATIONS ON VITA BY MELANIA MAZZUCCO AND NUOVOMONDO BY EMANUELE CRIALESE

The incipient formation of a multi-ethnic society in Italy in the new millenium has helped to revive academics and artists interest in Italian diaspora of the last century. The present paper aims to investigate the novel Vita (2003) by Mazzucco and the film The Golden Door (Nuovomondo) (2006) by Crialese in order to reveal some significant convergences in the recovery of the collective memory of Italian emigration to United States between the 19th and theearly 20th century. The study highlights which and how thematic elements and particular narrative structures create narrations that, in the novel as well as in the film, combine history and fiction, working out a close and a ‘bottom-up’ image of a cancelled past, that provokes an ethical response in the viewer and in the reader.
